Insider guide

Shopping Sawgrass Mills.

The story

Sawgrass Mills opened in 1990 on the edge of the Everglades in Sunrise, and at more than 2.4 million square feet it's Florida's largest mall. Simon, which owns it, counts more than 320 stores and restaurants. It's too big to see in one visit, so pick the part you came for and do that first.

There are three parts. The Colonnade Outlets is the open-air luxury wing, with about 70 luxury brand outlets. The main mall is the enclosed, air-conditioned loop of factory stores and off-price chains, with two food courts. The Oasis is the open-air section anchored by Nordstrom Rack, with a Regal IMAX and sit-down restaurants.

What to Expect

The Colonnade is why people drive up from Miami. Gucci, Prada, Fendi, Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga all run outlets here. For quieter labels, Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli and ZEGNA are the strongest stops. Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Tod's cover shoes, and Moncler and Burberry are useful if you're buying for a trip north.

Saks OFF 5TH and Bloomingdale's - The Outlet Store need a full lap each. Rebag buys, sells and trades pre-owned Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags. In The Oasis, Nike Factory Store and the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store are the draws, and Primark in the main mall is the value stop for basics.

Best Time to Visit

Hours are 10am to 9pm Monday through Saturday and 11am to 8pm on Sunday. Arrive at opening on a weekday and do the Colonnade first while you have energy, then move to The Oasis after lunch. On a rainy day, stay in the enclosed main mall, since the Colonnade and The Oasis are both outdoors. Holiday hours run longer in December.

If You Only Have an Hour

Park at the Colonnade end and stay in that wing. Start at Loro Piana, walk to Brunello Cucinelli and ZEGNA, and use the rest of your time for a fast lap of Saks OFF 5TH. Skip the main mall entirely.

Where to Eat

The West and East Dining Pavilions are fine for speed. For a real lunch in the Colonnade, Seasons 52 is a seasonal grill with wine flights, and La Doña Seafood & Grill near Bloomingdale's does tableside guacamole and lobster tacos. In The Oasis, Texas de Brazil carves meat tableside, which makes it a good end to the day.
