Stanley Whitman opened Bal Harbour Shops in 1965 as Florida's first high-fashion center, and it is still Miami's luxury address — 100+ fashion and jewelry houses around shaded koi ponds and tropical courtyards. Neiman Marcus arrived in 1971 and Saks in 1976, making it the first place both operated together. An expansion now underway adds nearly 250,000 square feet.

Insider guide

Shopping Bal Harbour.

The story

Bal Harbour Shops is Miami's luxury address. Stanley Whitman opened it in 1965 as Florida's first high-fashion center, and it now holds more than 100 fashion and jewelry houses around shaded koi ponds and tropical courtyards at 9700 Collins Avenue, at the quiet north end of the beach.

It is open-air, so you walk outside between stores. Neiman Marcus arrived in 1971 and Saks Fifth Avenue in 1976, making this the first place both operated together, and they still anchor the center. An expansion now underway adds nearly 250,000 square feet, and the 9700 Collins Ave entrance has been closed since February 2026 while the work goes on.

What to Expect

Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Goyard, Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli are all here, along with high jewelry from Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels and Harry Winston, and watch boutiques for Rolex and Audemars Piguet. The Webster mixes major houses with emerging designers. Swim is a specialty: Vilebrequin and Orlebar Brown, the two swim-trunk houses, are a short walk apart, and Zimmermann carries printed swimwear with its dresses. For gifts below the jewelry-case level, Le Labo hand-blends scents like Santal 33 and labels them to order, Santa Maria Novella sells the Florentine pharmacy's colognes and soaps, Michael Aram has metal serveware, and Assouline and Books & Books cover books.

Best Time to Visit

The center keeps the same hours every day, 11am to 9pm, so any day works; the exception is Neiman Marcus, which closes at 7pm on Sunday. Nothing opens before 11am, so there's no point arriving early. Because the walkways are outdoors, the center handles a passing shower but not a downpour, and in summer a late afternoon or evening visit is more comfortable than midday.

If You Only Have an Hour

Park in the 96th Street garage and start at Neiman Marcus, the 1971 anchor. Work through the courtyards to Goyard for its hand-painted chevron totes, then Le Labo to have a bottle blended and labeled. Finish at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown if anyone needs swim trunks.

Where to Eat

Carpaccio is the center's longtime Italian patio for carpaccio, Riviera salad and pizza between boutiques. Stephen Starr runs two rooms here: Makoto, on Level 3, for sushi and robata, and Slim's, a steakhouse known for its Wagyu-and-foie-gras cheesesteak and pink champagne cake. China Grill came back in June 2026 with its lobster pancakes. For a special dinner, The Surf Club Restaurant, about a mile south in Surfside, holds a MICHELIN star.
