Insider guide

Shopping Wynwood.

The story

Wynwood is a grid of former warehouses turned open-air gallery. The Wynwood Walls, founded in 2009 by Tony Goldman, put the neighborhood on the map, and now there are murals on nearly every façade. It is the most casual of Miami's shopping districts, with shops mixed in among bars and restaurants.

NW 2nd Avenue is the spine, and the shopping spills onto the numbered streets from NW 23rd to NW 27th. NW 26th Street east of the avenue is the densest block. The Walls sit near the middle at 2516 NW 2nd Ave, which makes them the natural place to start.

What to Expect

Menswear is Wynwood's strength. BASE (2215 NW 2nd Ave) moved here from Lincoln Road and carries designer labels, sneakers and its own fragrances; OFY (171 NW 25th St) sells Ofir Farahan's own loungewear and Florida-themed collections; and Billionaire Boys Club & ICECREAM (2545 NW 3rd Ave) is Pharrell's Snarkitecture-designed flagship with a 7-foot bronze astronaut by Daniel Arsham. Boho Hunter brings designers from Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, Pitusa sells Clara Lago's pima-cotton cover-ups and beach dresses, and Osme Perfumery stocks niche fragrance houses like Floris London. For art you can carry home, the Wynwood Walls Shop sells limited-edition prints, and the Museum of Graffiti ($16 admission) has a gift shop of prints and books.

Best Time to Visit

Shops open around 11am and close at 7 or 8pm, while food, ice cream and Wynwood Marketplace run late on Friday and Saturday. For shopping, come on a weekday, or before noon on a weekend, when parking is easier and it's cooler. Watch two schedules: Zak the Baker is closed Saturday, and Osme Perfumery is closed Monday. On the second Saturday of each month the Wynwood Art Walk runs in the evening, with galleries open and vendors out. It is a good night to visit and a hard night to park.

If You Only Have an Hour

Start at the Wynwood Walls Shop (2516 NW 2nd Ave), then cross to Pitusa (2501 NW 2nd Ave). Walk east on NW 26th Street to Osme Perfumery (164 NW 26th St) and Ben B Coco's chocolate a few doors down at 170. Finish one block south at OFY (171 NW 25th St).

Where to Eat

Start with coffee at Panther Coffee (2390 NW 2nd Ave), the roaster's original 2011 café. Zak the Baker (295 NW 26th St), in the MICHELIN Guide's Miami selection, is the lunch stop for naturally leavened bread and breakfast plates. For dinner, Hiden (313 NW 25th St) holds a MICHELIN star for its omakase counter behind a passcode door, and Hiyakawa Miami and Ossobuco are both in the guide's selection. Salt & Straw (246 NW 25th St) is open until midnight.
