Insider guide
Shopping Design District.
The story
The Miami Design District is a dozen walkable blocks north of Midtown where luxury flagships share sidewalks with Italian furniture showrooms, public art and two free museums. Most of the shopping fits on three short streets, NE 39th, 40th and 41st, between N Miami Avenue and NE 2nd Avenue.
Palm Court and Paradise Plaza are the center, and a 24-foot edition of Buckminster Fuller's Fly's Eye Dome in Palm Court is the meeting point. NE 41st Street has the heaviest run of fashion houses, NE 39th holds Hermès and Dior, and the furniture showrooms line NE 2nd Avenue at the east edge, around The Moore, a 1921 landmark with Zaha Hadid's Elastika in the atrium.
What to Expect
NE 41st Street is the luxury corridor: Louis Vuitton, CHANEL, Prada, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens and a men's-only Gucci. On NE 39th, Hermès (163 NE 39th St) stocks all 14 of the house's métiers, and Dior (162 NE 39th St) sits behind a concrete façade topped by the house's star. FoundRae, inside The Moore, sells a shell-motif Miami seal piece available only at that store. The best non-luxury stop is Dalé Zine Shop (50 NE 40th St), an independent art bookshop publishing since 2009. Furniture means Cassina, Armani/Casa, B&B Italia and Blu Dot. The art is free: the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami and the de la Cruz Collection charge nothing to enter.
Best Time to Visit
Boutiques are open Monday to Saturday 11am to 8pm and Sunday noon to 6pm, so a weekday or Saturday gives you the longest window. Sunday is the wrong day for furniture: Cassina, Armani/Casa and B&B Italia are closed, and so is Hermès. ICA's galleries are open Wednesday to Sunday and the de la Cruz Collection Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, so Wednesday through Saturday is the only stretch when both are open.
If You Only Have an Hour
Park at the Palm Court Garage and start under the Fly's Eye Dome. Walk NE 41st Street to Louis Vuitton (119 NE 41st St), then stop into the ICA Miami shop (61 NE 41st St), which is open daily. Cut one block south to Dalé Zine Shop (50 NE 40th St), and finish on NE 39th at Dior (162 NE 39th St).
Where to Eat
For lunch, Michael's Genuine (130 NE 40th St) has been the district's destination restaurant since 2007 and holds a Bib Gourmand, as does Mandolin Aegean Bistro (4312 NE 2nd Ave), with Greek and Turkish mezze in a garden. Sushi Yasu Tanaka serves quick nigiri sets inside the MIA Market food hall off NE 39th. Dinner is serious: L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami has two MICHELIN stars, and Le Jardinier Miami and Cote Miami have one each.
