Insider guide

Shopping Bayside.

The story

Bayside Marketplace is downtown Miami's open-air waterfront market at 401 Biscayne Blvd, set on Biscayne Bay next to the Kaseya Center. It has been operating for more than three decades, and it's built for visitors: souvenir shops, national chains and waterfront restaurants on the marina.

The marina is the real anchor. Island Queen Cruises sells tickets at booths in the marketplace for a 90-minute bilingual sightseeing cruise past the Star Island mansions on Millionaire's Row and the Port of Miami, leaving on the hour. Most people come for the boat and shop around it.

What to Expect

This is the place for gifts and beach gear, not designer labels. Margaritaville Retail Store and LandShark Surf Shack cover tees, tumblers and beach bags, and The Vacation Supply has souvenirs and sunscreen. Lids stocks Heat, Dolphins and Marlins caps, and Mad About Soccer has carried national-team and club jerseys since 2001. For a one-off souvenir, IrisPhoto photographs your iris and prints it on the spot, and 3D Laserland etches your photo inside crystal. Chains include Victoria's Secret, Foot Locker, Crocs, Sunglass Hut and Bath & Body Works, plus IT'SUGAR and Build-A-Bear Workshop for kids.

Best Time to Visit

Bayside keeps long hours: 10am to 10pm Monday through Thursday, 10am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 9pm on Sunday, with bars and restaurants open later. Cruises run on the hour from 11am to 7pm, so the last boat leaves well before closing. Check the Kaseya Center schedule before you drive, since garage rates change on event nights.

If You Only Have an Hour

Buy cruise tickets for a later departure first. Then walk to Lids for a Heat or Marlins cap, stop at IrisPhoto if you want a print made while you shop, and finish at Mad About Soccer for a jersey. Finish at IT'SUGAR if there are kids in tow.

Where to Eat

La Cañita, Michelle Bernstein's second-floor restaurant, has bay views, empanadas, conch fritters and five kinds of mojitos. Bacon Bitch Bayside does brunch with live music but closes around 4 or 5pm. Elsewhere downtown, Niu Kitchen does tapas and paella, Tam Tam serves Vietnamese, and ViceVersa off the Elser Hotel lobby has thin-crust pizza.
