Coconut Grove

Grand Ave and Main Hwy, under the banyans.

Miami's oldest neighborhood keeps a village feel under its banyan canopy. CocoWalk anchors Grand Avenue with swimwear, sneakers and jewelry, while Main Highway and Commodore Plaza hold the independents: a long-running jeweler, a church-run resale shop, a crystal shop and one of the city's best bookstores.

Insider guide

Shopping Coconut Grove.

The story

Coconut Grove is Miami's oldest neighborhood, and it still feels like a village under its banyan trees. The shopping runs in three short pieces: Main Highway, Commodore Plaza just off it, and Grand Avenue, where CocoWalk is the anchor.

Main Highway is the best block. Between 3401 and 3444 Main Hwy you'll find a bookstore, a coffee roaster, a jeweler in a former bank building and a Colombian swim shop, all within a few minutes' walk. Commodore Plaza holds the independents, and CocoWalk at 3015 Grand Ave has the national brands and the latest hours.

What to Expect

On Main Highway, Books & Books has author events and a BANH pop-up for banh mi and bubble tea. H&H Jewels has been in the Grove for more than 25 years with in-house designs plus John Hardy and Marco Bicego. LoveShackFancy, Buck Mason and the eyewear house MOSCOT are a few doors apart, and Agua Bendita sells Colombian swim and resortwear. Celestial Treasures has crystals, tarot and walk-in readings.

On Commodore Plaza, The Griffin carries Chloé, Valentino and Isabel Marant shoes, Digs is a women's boutique, and This 'N That is a church-run resale shop that has funded local missions since 1957. CocoWalk has Montce swimwear, Gas Bijoux jewelry, FP Movement, Sportive sneakers and Salt & Straw ice cream.

Best Time to Visit

Saturday is the day to come: the Coconut Grove Organic Market runs 10am to 7pm at Grand Ave and Margaret St. Panther Coffee opens at 7am and Books & Books at 9am, but most shops don't open until 10 or 11. Skip Sunday if H&H Jewels is on your list, since it's closed that day. CocoWalk stays open later on Friday and Saturday, and Salt & Straw serves until midnight.

If You Only Have an Hour

Stay on one block of Main Highway. Get a coffee at Panther Coffee (3407), browse Books & Books next door (3409), cross to H&H Jewels (3434), and end at Agua Bendita (3444). Chug's Diner shares Agua Bendita's 3444 address if you want a guava pastelito for the road.

Where to Eat

The Grove has two MICHELIN-starred restaurants on Main Highway: Ariete at 3540 for a tasting menu, and Los Félix at 3413 for heirloom-corn Mexican cooking. Krüs Kitchen is upstairs from Los Félix. For something quick, Chug's Diner, a Bib Gourmand pick, does oversized Cuban-bread sandwiches and oxtail ajiaco.
